Mexico has had a stable micro economy for over 17 years now. This means low inflation, an open economy, manageable levels of debt and a growing competitiveness. Thanks to Japanese car manufacturers investing in Mexico, the economic future continues to look good. Moreover, the government is planning to open its doors even wider for foreign investors and the oil sector.

In short, Mexico is not doing badly economically, and in recent years, has also seen significant growth. The nation is an important trade partner (3rd largest) and resource for the United States, and has even overtaken China in certain sectors. Some regions of the country offer a considerable logistical advantage for labour-intensive production and warehousing. For example, there are many companies that offer their clients an efficient production environment in Mexico, without their needing to set up a foreign entity or subsidiary company (the so-called tax free ‘maquiladoras’).

The opportunities for foreign companies in Mexico chiefly lie in the textile sector, the automotive industry (subcontractors), the energy sector (wind energy and infrastructure plan 2013-2018) and the food sector (chocolate, beer and patisserie).

Despite the great opportunities that Mexico offers, Mexican bureaucracy and customs laws often leave much to be desired. Furthermore, they can be difficult to understand and follow. It is therefore absolutely essential to be thoroughly prepared before entering this market.
