Thailand

Export is a central component of the Thai economy. In 1972, when export promotion first became the focus of government policy, export was a mere 13% of GDP. In 1987, this had already risen to 23% and in 1998 to as much as 50%.

Many European companies trade successfully with Thailand, especially in the food sector (seafood), the petrochemical industry and agriculture. The laws and rules surrounding taxation on company incomes and added value can, just like the customs rules, create an obstacle to doing profitable trade with or in Thailand. In addition, it is important to take the political situation in Thailand into consideration: in May 2014, the army seized power following violent protests. The country is characterised by ever increasing political instability, which often leads to a military coup d’état.

Despite its political difficulties, Thailand offers numerous opportunities for European companies and in this context, is primarily in need of infrastructure solutions. Just as with any new sales market, it is advisable to be properly prepared before starting to trade.
